How to Apply Self Tanner So it Lasts

How to Apply Self Tanner So it Lasts

At this point we all know how bad natural tanning is for our skin and health. Prolonged sun exposure can result in all sorts of nasty ramifications, from premature wrinkles to cancer. Japanese and Korean beauty companies have been light years ahead of the West when it comes to creating products that emphasize the importance of UV protection. Thankfully, it seems as if Western brands are starting to catch up.

However, unlike Asian countries, pale or fair skin is not the beauty ideal in the West. And while light skin is absolutely beautiful, Western women will probably always want to appear bronzed, tan and glowing, especially in the summer months. We can't help it; we love the look of tan skin.

Thanks to the rise of self-tanning products, it is possible to get a tanned look without risking your health. If you want to be have that just kissed from the sun look this summer without putting your health in danger, follow these tips on how you can apply self-tanner so that it's even, and more importantly, so it lasts.

Tip One: Start With the Right Foundation
Self tanner needs a smooth foundation to cling to. When your skin is excessively dry, self tanner tends to not only concentrate itself in your dry patches, but it flakes away fast. The recipe to a really stellar self tanner application is a combination of exfoliating and moisturizing a few days ahead of your application.

When it comes to prepping your skin for self-tanner, we love the REN Guerande Salt Exfoliating Body Balm. Unlike other scrubs, you massage this into dry skin before getting into the shower. Moisturizing ingredients ensure that your skin remains hydrated while you're sloughing away dry patches and flakiness.

When you get out of the shower, apply a body oil to your skin when it's still slightly damp. Do this a day or so before you self tan and your skin will be supple, hydrated and ready for tanning product.

Tip Two: Remember the "SPA" Rule
When you're ready to apply self tanner, remember the "SPA" rule. This stands for "slow, precise application."

The reason a lot of women end up with an uneven or unsightly tan is because they apply their self tanner the same way they would a body cream or lotion. Remember, the product you're applying is meant to change the color of your skin. You can't just glop it on, rub it in and hope for the best.

Treat your self tanner application like a spa treatment. Work slowly, applying the product in long strokes and blending. Don't do multiple layers at once. Instead, wait for the first layer to dry completely. If you still want a darker hue, then you can repeat your application. For a really even application, use a very slightly dampened Beauty Blender sponge. Do this every night for a few days and eventually you'll see the color you desire.

Tip Three: Be Extra Cautious With the Face
Applying self tanner to your face requires the utmost precision. A slightly wonky body tan isn't the worst thing in the world, but a face tan that is even half a shade off can totally ruin your look for a week or so.

If you want to ensure that you don't accidentally board the train to Ooompa Loompa land, it's a good idea to mix self tanner with a facial moisturizer and apply the product gradually over the course of a few days.

Tip Four: Make the Tan Last
Remember that body scrub you used before you applied your self tanner? Yeah, you're going to want to put it into storage for a little bit. Body scrubs can cause your self tanner application to fade in an uneven and weird way. Instead, just gently exfoliate with your shower loofa or body wash poof.

Don't forget that your tan wants moisturized skin to cling to. Continue to moisturize regularly in the weeks after you've applied your self tanner. In addition to using a body oil after showering, apply a light lotion a few times a day to keep your skin glowing and hydrated. The Hempz Original Herbal Body Moisturizer is perfect for regular application. It's deeply hydrating, but light enough to be applied frequently throughout the day.

Give Your Skin a Sun Break
Hopefully this summer will be when we finally accept that self tanner beats sun exposure any day of the week. It's time to rely on sun in a bottle, which doesn't cause wrinkles, brown spots and skin cancer. When you hit the beach this summer, make sure to protect your skin. When it comes to the body, just about any sunscreen will do, provided that it has an SPF of 15 or more.

We here at Frends Beauty hope you have a safe, amazing and gorgeous summer. If you're ready to try self tanner for the first time or just restock on the products that you already love, we have you covered. Become a member today to save 10% on your summertime beauty haul.
