Have you always wanted a tattoo, but are afraid to take the plunge? Or maybe you just want a temporary tattoo to complete your Halloween costume. Whatever the reason, you can easily create your own temporary tattoo right at home using makeup! Here's how:
As with most other makeup application, it goes on smoother and lasts longer if you have a clean base. Wash your skin thoroughly and, if you've got any hair there, shave it (just like they would for a real tattoo!) Depending on the location, an astringent could be beneficial too. This ensures that all of those oils are stripped and your makeup will really stick.
Unless you're a talented freestyle artist, it's a good idea to use a stencil for your design. Trace the stencil with your product of choice - we recommend eyeliner or, even better, waterproof liquid liner. It can be a little messy to work with at first, but it has crazy good staying power and looks more realistic than other types of eyeliner. Even better than that, there are specialty products available that are made for creating temporary tattoos. These will look the most realistic.
Once you have your basic design outlined, color that bad boy in! Creamy, long-lasting eye shadows or waterproof liners work well. Some people use Sharpies, but we prefer to stick with products made for the skin. One of our favorites for this project is our line of special FX make up supplies. There are tons of highly pigmented, long-lasting colors in creamy kits, thin creme pencils, crayons and more.
Once you're satisfied with the look of your tattoo, it's time to seal it. We recommend a makeup setting spray or a light dusting of translucent powder, but some people have found success with a spritz of hairspray. Tattoos can add so much to your look, whether it's for a costume party or just because you're feeling something different that day. Using this method, you don't have to commit to one forever - you can change it up with your mood and day. Whatever the occasion, we know you'll love rocking your new (temporary) tattoo!
