Fun New Lipstick Trends to Try in 2017

In 2016, we saw contouring hit an all-time high in popularity. From crazy highlighters to professional techniques becoming totally mainstream, 2016 was definitely the year of the face.

As we look at the trends to expect for 2017, we're seeing a lot of returns to more natural-looking complexions. However, that doesn't mean that this will be a boring year for makeup. We're super excited about the biggest trend we're seeing, which is gorgeous and experimental lip looks.

If you want to try some of these lip looks for yourself, then keep reading for the best new lipstick trends to try in 2017.

1. Ombre

We usually think of lip color as solid; as in, the entire lip is the same shade. In fact, we associate pairing a different liner and lipstick with some rather cringe-inducing makeup looks of yesteryear.

The ombre trend isn't about using different hues, but rather using two shades in the same color family to create a gradient finish.

To get the look, use a lip brush to apply the darker of the two shades to the outer portion of your lips. Then, use a clean brush to apply the lighter hue to the inner portion, carefully blending to create a smooth transition. This requires a little more effort than traditional lip looks, but the result is totally worth it.

2. Metallic Lip Toppers

We're in love with bold lips that have a metallic finish. There's two ways to get this look. The first is by dabbing a metallic eyeshadow over your lipstick with your finger to give your lips an eye-catching finish. The second is the more moisturizing option, which is by using a lip product specifically designed to give a metallic shine.

We're obsessed with the Jouer Cosmetics Long-Wear Lip Topper in Tan Lines, which is quickly gaining cult-status in the industry. It instantly transforms any lip color into a stunning metallic.

3. Contoured Lips

Yes, you can contour your lips. We know, crazy.

Similar to how you contour your face, contouring the lips is all about highlighting the areas that you want to pop and darkening the areas that you want to recede. In the case of the lips, you want to use a shimmery highlighting product on your cupid's bow. Then, use a darker shade to darken the skin just outside the center of your lower lip. You can also use your favorite lip liner to strategically draw lines that will create the illusion of larger lips.
