We have a very exciting interview for you today with the tremendously talented makeup artist Ariel Diaz! A self-described cosmetic illusionist, Ariel creates amazing transformations on both himself and others with an impressive attention to detail that you have to see to believe. His serious skills are apparent in both the original looks and the recreations he puts together, from Beyonce and Angelina Jolie to Angela Bassett, Lady Gaga, and more. You can see more of Ariel's amazing work at @theevanitydiary on Instagram.
We were lucky enough to get some feedback from him on a variety of makeup and beauty topics. Check out what he has to say below!
Q: How did you learn such amazing makeup skills?
I was actually a painter/sketcher and I did shading with make-up brushes. One day I was needed to do some Halloween makeup at my mom's school and I fell in love with it and I haven’t stopped since. (Frends note: check out our Halloween makeup section for inspiration!)
Q: Do you have any products you simply can't live without? If so, what are they?
Q: What makeup trends do you think are the most overrated and underrated right now?
“Strobing” as it's being called is just highlighting without contouring and it has been around since the 60’s but you know how trends are.
Q: What is the favorite celebrity-lookalike makeup look you've done so far on Instagram?
Doing Angelina Jolie basically launched my whole career, I do her every once in awhile. On top of being my favorite actress we also have similar features so it's such a blast recreating her, maleficent was my absolute favorite look to do, prosthetics and all!
Q: What are the most annoying comments you hear about makeup and how do you handle them?
When people try to undermine other people's styles. Although I don’t like everyone's style of makeup I’ll never put anyone down simply because I don’t like something, if it works for you & it makes you happy it works for me. At the end of the day it’s just makeup!
Q: If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering pursuing makeup but still unsure, what would it be?
Be prepared to give it your all. Just like any other job in the art field you have to practice nonstop to hone your craft. I’ve been doing this for almost 4 years now and I still learn something new everyday. Know your history, read tons of makeup books. Once you’ve decided on a style, just stay true to your vision and don’t let anyone sway you.
We’re very grateful that Ariel took the time to do this interview and hope you found some inspiration or learned something from this post. Take the time to check out Ariel’s Instagram, Twitter, and Website. You won’t be disappointed!
