We managed to catch a few minutes with Aaron, who gave us a glimpse at what drew him to theatrical makeup, and the differences between creating for the stage and other mediums.
How did you get your start in makeup?
I actually started doing makeup in community/children's theatre.
What made you gravitate toward theatre makeup?
I was always in the cast, and started doing other cast members’ makeup and eventually started designing the makeup plots.
What are some products that you need in your kit no matter what?
MUFE Artistic & Natural Flash Palettes, Ben Nye Final Seal, Spirit Gum, Glitter!!!
What are some of the main differences between doing stage makeup, and makeup for other projects like film/tv, bridal, or print?
HD Makeup v.s. Natural
Who/what was the most intricate character you've ever had to create for the stage?
Ursula in The Little Mermaid
For the layperson, are there any differences between what would typically be classified as stage makeup, and makeup for every day?
Stage makeup is typically much more exaggerated so it can be seen from far away.
Last, what's the coolest/funniest/most memorable event that's happened in your career in theatre makeup?
One of my favorite things to do is children's theatre. I usually teach the kids the makeup look and have them replicate. They are proud of themselves, and I come check on the makeup during the mid-show weekend.
We’d like to extend our appreciation to Aaron for taking the time out of his schedule to talk with us. His love of makeup sparked on the community theatre stage. When did your passion for beauty first ignite? Share your origin story with us in the comments below.
